After graduation, drunk on possibilities, I mustered the confidence to write THE Robert Motherwell - whose brooding Spanish Elegy masterpieces awed me. Awestruck by his studio’s proximity in Westchester, I spilled awkward adulation, not expecting attention from an art titan.
So imagine my shock when a package arrived - Motherwell taking time to encourage an overzealous fan! Inside, I discovered photos, exhibition pamphlets, and a gracious note about creative journeys. Though the contents scattered during a household move years later, the gesture stayed seared in my memory.
That small generosity renewed my dedication even though life’s messy detours eventually moved away from fine art. Slogging through corporate sales and marketing, Motherwell reminded me that creative passion deserves nurturing wherever we wander. Decades later, rediscovering those inky elegies, I hear his voice persisting: “Keep sight of what most moves you. Master technique but stay tethered to personal vision’s magnetic North pulling you toward truth.”
Now I know even giants stand on the shoulders of guides, lighting the way forward through shadows. And shouldering others is the surest path to ascend beyond mortal limits into enduring influence. I cling to that compass as I create cancerART decades later - still striving to shape raw longing into forms hinting at the divine because one luminary took an interest in an overeager student long ago.
