North Carolina Roots

Martin's

Captain John

Here is a photograph of Martin's great-grandparents, John and Martha Wescott, and his maternal grandmother (their youngest child), Mabel. Captain John T. Wescott was a lighthouse keeper and a member of the lifesaving service on North Carolina's Outer Banks during a pivotal moment in history - the Wright brother's first flight. This legacy of guardianship over North Carolina's treasured landscapes and critical historical events runs deep in the Wescott and Martin families, instilling a sense of pride and belonging to a state Martin called home for over twenty years.

Mabel Attends Duke

Martin's maternal grandmother, Mabel Wescott Martin, attended Trinity College, now known as Duke University's East Campus. Her pursuit of education during an era when women's academic opportunities were limited speaks to a family tradition of resilience, enlightenment, and support. Martin's grandmother's education and spirit may explain why Martin attended Vassar College.

Elizabeth & Louise

This photo captures an awe-inspiring moment - Martin's mother, Elizabeth Martin, standing in front of Louise Nevelson's monumental "Black Zag CC" sculpture at the North Carolina Museum of Art. It was a moment that resonated, as she had met Nevelson in her New York studio years before. She shared Nevelson's tales of scouring New York City for the materials to create her unique sculptures.

Martin explains the connection as two formidable women, one a renowned artist and the other an ardent enthusiast, united by their profound belief in and love for art's transformative power. This power to transport us to different times and places to evoke emotions and memories is what ArtCures is all about.
