Where an artist buys their supplies is a meaningful relationship. I've shopped Pear Paint in New York, where all of my abstract expressionist heroes, including Robert Rauschenberg, shopped. I'll never match Bob's talent, but I must have visited every mom-and-pop art supply store in New York, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, searching for art supplies. I started buying from Jerry's when we moved from Chicago to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Still, I didn't know Jerry's Artarama, a renowned art supply store based in Raleigh, North Carolina was based in North Carolina. When I discovered Jerry's was in Raleigh, I made them my primary art supplies source, and I've never been disappointed.
Jerry's has excellent customer service. When I couldn't find the oil sticks I liked, they helped me find a better replacement. Jerry's also had the French oils I liked, so they became more than just a retailer. They became my "Google" for art supplies. Jerry's was my first and usually best resource when I needed to know something like how to cut Maimeri Puro and use Sennelier Oil Sticks. My journey with Jerry's began as a customer and quickly evolved into admiration for their extensive catalog of art supplies, including hard-to-find items like French oil paints or Oil sticks. Jerry's was always more than helpful.
What sets Jerry's Artarama apart is its affordability, diverse inventory, and commitment to customer service. Jerry Goldstein's approach to serving artists went beyond mere transactions when he opened his first store in the 1960s. He understood and catered to each artist's unique needs in his store, then stores, and then his catalog, creating an environment where both budding and seasoned artists feel valued and supported.
Jerry Goldstein is gone, but his sons continue to run the company based on their father's values, ideals, and support for art and artists. I like and plan to support The Jerry Goldstein Foundation. The foundation helps artists with grants and supports arts education. The Goldstein Foundation supports patients like me, too, because they understand art and artists bring hope and courage to cancer patients fighting for their lives.
The story of Jerry's Artarama resonates with many in the art community and those who navigate their life's challenges. Jerry's Artarama stands out as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Their dedication to the arts and those brave enough to create makes Jerry's Artarama more than just a store; it's a vital part of the artistic journey for many, providing supplies, encouragement, support, and a community.
